How much does an Immich server really cost?
The honest answer is not a single shopping-list total. Your storage growth, recovery copies, electricity and operating preference determine whether local hardware or a VPS is cheaper.
The five mandatory cost lines
- Primary storage: originals, generated media and free-space headroom.
- Recovery storage: at least one independent copy; mirrored disks alone are not backup.
- Compute: Immich recommends 8GB RAM and four CPU cores, with 6GB and two cores as minimums.
- Power and maintenance: continuous electricity, replacement drives and your administration time.
- Remote protection: off-site backup or a second physical location.
Local server cost model

Local ownership tends to become more attractive as the library grows, especially when you already own suitable hardware. It also concentrates operational responsibility: power, network, patching, monitoring and tested restores remain yours.
VPS cost model
compute + attached storage + snapshots + transfer + managed-service premium
A low compute price is not a comparable quote unless it includes the same usable storage and recovery design. Ask for a written monthly total and enter it into the calculator.
